  • NBC is hosting a live EPL Fan Fest in Austin next month – The stateside broadcasters will be set up in a mobile studio at Scholz Garden for the weekend of Oct. 26 & 27. They did this last season in a few New England cities, with 12,000 fans in attendance in Boston, for example. The events are free and open to the public, though space is, naturally, limited. Details and RSVP at NBC Sports.
  • Taking Attendance 9/16/2019: USL Championship Down A Bit – With the regular season drawing to a close, this attendance report puts the Austin Bold FC inaugural season in context with the league overall. Their average of 2,357 per game puts them in 25th (of 36).
  • Introducing Zanate Musical Collective – These members of Austin Anthem, the Austin FC supporters’ group, are organized and already regularly practicing their trumpets, trombones, and drums, big & small.
  • Fan-designed Austin FC jerseys – A young graphic designer from Portugal is starting to imagine what our future MLS team’s jerseys might look like. A home kit, an away kit, and a third kit, too.

Watched

FC Dallas took one point from two road games: after a 4-0 thrashing at Chicago, they scraped by in Seattle with a 1-1 draw with the Sounders.

The Dynamo fell 1-2 to Whitecaps in Vancouver.

Austin Bold FC lost 1-2 to Reno 1868 FC

The home side hit the post twice in the second half in the search for an equalizer, but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. Reno 1868 left Austin with all three points.

UT soccer lost two at home: 4-0 vs. Monmouth on Sunday, and 1-0 vs. Providence on Thursday.

Gonna Watch

Dynamo host Orlando City SC – Saturday at 7:30 (ESPN+). It’s a tough road for Houston to make into the playoffs, but they’re not mathematically eliminated yet.

Grambling State at UT – Sunday at 2:00 at Mike A. Myers Stadium

FC Dallas hosts NYCFC – Sunday at 5:00 in Dallas (UniMas). This is the “Hall of Fame” game, following Saturday’s induction of Abby Wambach and Sunil Gulati. Chris will be there in person, cheering on the Hoops to victory over the Pigeons, trying to sneak into the playoffs.

Las Vegas Lights at Bold FC – Sunday at 6:00 at Bold Stadium (or ESPN+), where it’s Fan Appreciation Night: post-game fireworks, $2 beers, discounts on merch, and free food for kids 12 and under.

Head coach Marcelo Serrano looks to return Bold Stadium to it’s winning ways after two consecutive defeats. With Austin fighting for a vital playoff spot, every remaining game this season is critical in a congested USL Championship western conference.

Shout-out to:

Abby Wambach, a perfect addition to the US Soccer Hall of Fame if there ever was one. Check out this fantastic interview with her ahead of her induction this weekend.

When I was five, when I was 10, when I was 15, there wasn’t really a known national team, at least to me. There, of course, wasn’t a professional women’s soccer league to be playing, and so I think the thing that makes me most excited about this honor is that it’s indicative of the growth that the game has taken over the last couple of decades, since getting into the US national team programs. And for me, obviously, that feels, I feel so amazed that I was a part of that in some way. Even if it’s small as a player, even if it’s a little bit bigger, as a leader or a captain. But to see the growth of the game of women’s soccer over the last two decades is nothing short of a miracle. And to know that there are millions of kids out in the world now that have something to dream about is really truly the purpose that I went about.
