Road Report: North Carolina Courage at Houston Dash

On Saturday Chris G. road-tripped to Houston to watch the North Carolina Courage take on the Houston Dash in a regular-season NWSL match.

I try to get over to Houston at least once a year to catch an NWSL game, though I missed last season, with Hurricane Harvey screwing up the last few games of their schedule (among many more serious effects, of course).

The Dash front office contacted me earlier in the week and offered a stadium tour prior … Read the rest “Road Report: North Carolina Courage at Houston Dash”

Road Report: Dallas in CCL Round of 16

On Wednesday Chris G. road-tripped to Frisco to watch FC Dallas vs. Tauro FC in CONCACAF Champions League action.

The plan was to take a quick trip north, visit our favorite University of North Texas student, and have a pleasant evening watching my MLS team advance through the first knockout round of CONCACAF Champions League. Some of that plan worked out, and some of it didn’t.

With a rain forecast of 100% chance, my wife & daughter showed what fair-weather … Read the rest “Road Report: Dallas in CCL Round of 16”

Road Report: Hudson River Derby

Last week Chris G. visited New York City with his family, and managed to squeeze a soccer game in, in between visiting museums and monuments.

Taking the better part of a day out of our NYC sightseeing trip to travel to the Bronx for an MLS game was partly due to my own soccer fandom, sure. But it was also due to my wife’s growing interest in the sport, especially as played by the handsome megastars who happen to be … Read the rest “Road Report: Hudson River Derby”

Tuesday evening we were fortunate enough to make the road trip from Austin to Houston and witness the USMNT take on the greatness that is Messi and his Argentina squad. The winner of the match would be headed to the Copa America Final and many of the red, white, and blue supporters had hope.

Road Report: San Antonio FC Home Opener

San Antonio FC kicked off their USL home campaign Saturday night with a record-setting crowd. The home team got off to a slow start as Swope Park Rangers took the early lead when a loose ball found the SAFC net in the 2nd minute.

Both clubs are expansion sides for the 2016 USL regular season, but have had hot starts in league play. Throughout the first half, SAFC controlled possession and equalized in the 42nd minute. The second half was a … Read the rest “Road Report: San Antonio FC Home Opener”

Road Report: USWNT Olympic Qualifier in Dallas

On Saturday Chris G. road-tripped to Frisco to watch the U.S. Women’s National Team play Mexico in the second of three group games in the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

The last time I made the trip up I-35 to Dallas for a soccer game was the FC Dallas – Portland Timbers playoff game last November, and my experience this weekend could hardly have been more different. In November I was late, in terrible weather, and stuck in ridiculous Read the rest “Road Report: USWNT Olympic Qualifier in Dallas”

Road Report: USWNT Victory Tour in San Antonio

Both of your Violet Crown Soccer correspondents made the trip down to San Antonio last Thursday to see the U.S. women’s national team on the Texas leg of their 2015 Victory Tour. Though we didn’t see the world cup trophy itself – thanks to the Alamodome’s goofy no re-entry policy – we did see: a lively American Outlaws tailgate & march, a Christen Press hat-trick, a six-zero final scoreline, and lots of enthusiastic USWNT fans. Below are a few pictures … Read the rest “Road Report: USWNT Victory Tour in San Antonio”

Road Report: MLS Western Conference Final

Sunday night Chris G. road-tripped to Frisco to watch FC Dallas host Portland Timbers FC in the second leg of the MLS Western Conference championship. His Dallas team came in to the game down two goals from the first leg, but with one road goal that might have made the difference… but didn’t. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving Portland to win the series on aggregate, 5-3.

I’m not here to give a match report, I just thought I’d … Read the rest “Road Report: MLS Western Conference Final”
