On the Wave

At the US vs. Nigeria game on Wednesday night, we were part of a full, enthusiastic crowd at McKalla Place, the first in history. The mood was high, the night was warm, and the excitement was electric. Some of our most beloved American stars were on the field, working hard to break down a tough and disciplined Nigerian defense.

And then someone started the wave.

Not a surprise, but another small step forward anyway: U.S. Soccer repeals ‘anthem policy,’ apologizes to Black community.

The policy was put in place after Megan Rapinoe kneeled in solidarity with the peaceful protest inspired by Colin Kaepernick, who was protesting police brutality, and the systematic oppression of Black people and people of color in America. It has become clear that this policy was wrong and detracted from the important message of Black Lives Matter.

And there it is:

The NWSL will be the first American professional sports league to return when they begin competitive matches at the end of June.

What US Soccer needs is a much larger overhaul. Heather O’Reilly, who was on the Athlete Council that voted for Cordeiro, said US Soccer should go through “a lengthy process of reorganization”. She’s right, but the federation has resisted it for this long – why should anything change now?

Giovanni Reyna, the 17-year-old son of Austin FC sporting director Claudio Reyna, is following in his father’s cleat-steps. He’s even been making waves with Borussia Dortmund’s U19s:
