Relocation Grudges Past & Future

Historic USA Map

by Chris G.

I hated Orlando after the Aztex (“1.0”) moved there. I hated Orlando a lot. I wished nothing but the worst for that team, top to bottom. I wanted that owner and his greedy and misguided plans to not just fail, but to fail spectacularly. Here’s a bit of what I wrote at the time on my blog, The Aztexan:

I hope Orlando The City Beautiful City Soccer City Club SC or whatever the fuck

Road Report: Dallas in CCL Round of 16

On Wednesday Chris G. road-tripped to Frisco to watch FC Dallas vs. Tauro FC in CONCACAF Champions League action.

The plan was to take a quick trip north, visit our favorite University of North Texas student, and have a pleasant evening watching my MLS team advance through the first knockout round of CONCACAF Champions League. Some of that plan worked out, and some of it didn’t.

With a rain forecast of 100% chance, my wife & daughter showed what fair-weather … Read the rest “Road Report: Dallas in CCL Round of 16”

My Stadium Pick: McKalla Place

by Lee Nichols

One of my favorite sayings is “the perfect is the enemy of the good.”

I usually apply it to politics, when I’m annoyed at those who demand ideological purity and refuse to consider a candidate who is actually electable.

I think it may apply to our Major League Soccer stadium search, as well.

On Tuesday, City of Austin staff released a map of public properties that might be used for the Columbus Crew if the team relocates … Read the rest “My Stadium Pick: McKalla Place”

MLS Austin Market Survey

MLS

If you’re a regular reader of this site, you probably already received or heard about this: an organization called Barrett Sports Group has been retained by MLS to conduct a survey to evaluate potential support for major league soccer in Austin. It’s unclear where exactly they got the mailing list, or who is behind this effort, but hey, it’s more action than we’ve seen since the Aztex left the field last year.

If you haven’t filled it out yet, here’s Read the rest “MLS Austin Market Survey”

Road Report: Hudson River Derby

Last week Chris G. visited New York City with his family, and managed to squeeze a soccer game in, in between visiting museums and monuments.

Taking the better part of a day out of our NYC sightseeing trip to travel to the Bronx for an MLS game was partly due to my own soccer fandom, sure. But it was also due to my wife’s growing interest in the sport, especially as played by the handsome megastars who happen to be … Read the rest “Road Report: Hudson River Derby”

Manneh’s Stock Continues to Climb

Austin soccer fans who followed the 2012 Aztex saw first-hand what a talented player Kekuta Manneh was, and how he grew under coach and father-figure Paul Dalglish. The following year saw him drafted by MLS’ Vancouver Whitecaps, where his growth has continued without slowing. The past few weeks have seen the young goal-scorer in headlines across the Internet; here are a few highlights of what the former Aztex striker is up to.

USL, A Growing Problem?

The United Soccer League continues to experience phenomenal growth as they prepare to begin the 2016 season. The league boasts the addition of six new clubs to the North American landscape, bringing their total to 29, with an additional club (Reno) already slated to join in 2017.

Four of the six additions are directly associated with MLS clubs; some with unique names (Sporting Kansas City’s Swope Park Rangers, Houston Dynamo’s Rio Grande Valley FC, and Philadelphia Union’s Bethlehem Steel FC), … Read the rest “USL, A Growing Problem?”

Road Report: MLS Western Conference Final

Sunday night Chris G. road-tripped to Frisco to watch FC Dallas host Portland Timbers FC in the second leg of the MLS Western Conference championship. His Dallas team came in to the game down two goals from the first leg, but with one road goal that might have made the difference… but didn’t. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving Portland to win the series on aggregate, 5-3.

I’m not here to give a match report, I just thought I’d … Read the rest “Road Report: MLS Western Conference Final”
